Awards
In Model United Nations, there are several awards given out to the finest delegates in each committee and to a few delegations from single schools. The types and names of awards depend on each individual conference; however, most conferences follow the same general guidelines.
Individual Awards
These awards are different for each committee in which the size can range from ten to four hundred delegates. Individual awards are typically given out in three categories: Commendation, Outstanding, and Best Delegate.
There are generally eight to ten awards given in each committee, but this range can differ based upon the size of the committee (smaller committees will tend to give fewer awards). There will usually be four people given Commendations, three awarded Outstanding, and one Best Delegate. However, it is important to note that often times, debates are extremely competitive and the difference in awards can amount to just one or two points out of around two hundred. This is why it is important to note that while getting high level awards is an amazing reflection of your skill as a delegate, it does not mean that you weren’t one of the best delegates just because you didn’t receive an award.
Delegation Awards
These are recognition of an entire school's or club’s performance. For this reason there are less awards in this section. Awards are commonly split up between size of delegation (small and large) and recognize the outstanding and best delegations. In this way, there will usually be a winner or two for outstanding and best school of each size. Similar to individual awards, best delegation is a slightly higher award than outstanding.
Some conferences do awards differently. Conferences like NHSMUN in New York only give delegation awards and no individual awards. Conferences like NAIMUN in Washington D.C. do Verbal Commendations instead of printed formal commendations. Each conference and committee varies on the amount of awards given individually and delegation-wise as well. Most local conferences grant only best school awards, whereas many college and travel conferences do best and outstanding school awards.
In the end, the amount, style, and type of awards vary conference to conference. In this brief evaluation almost every award scenario has been covered. However, what is most important to know is that as part of Mira Costa Model UN, we will be trying to win the best award in every committee and conference.

- A Commendation is the first award given of the three, recognizing a delegate for great work and skills in debate. It typically means that they were within the top ten delegates in a given committee. Some conferences may give Verbal Commendations as additional award or instead of a paper certificate
- The Outstanding Delegate award is a sign of great skill and preparation for the debate and typically means that you were within the top three to four delegates in the committee.
- The Best Delegate award is given to the delegate who performs, prepares, and is the most knowledgeable in the entire committee. Receiving the Best Delegate award is typically accompanied by receiving the gavel that the chairs used to moderate debate and thus termed as “Gaveling."
