·         New in the Art Gallery Room 60: A collaborative show from Art 2/3 and Creative Writing, “From Poetry to Paint.” Open until Monday, Jan. 14.

·         Attention Students: Talent Show Auditions are Thursday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan. 18 in the Auditorium. Please come by the ASB Room and sign up!

·         HEART Club is traveling to Fiji Islands for community service during Ski Week: Feb. 16 – 24, 2019. Anyone interested in this wonderful service trip? Come to Room 56 this Friday, 1/11/19.

·      Please return your textbooks if you are in a single semester class. The library is currently in Room 18 (between Chen and Houterman). Students will not be allowed to check out books for next semester until first semester books are returned. If you still need any textbooks, please see Mrs. Sullivan in Room 18.

·      Lost and Found: Lost something? Please come by the Attendance Office before Friday, 1/25 to check the Lost and Found for your item. After that date, any remaining items will be donated to charity.

·      Students who have excused periods (other than zero period): Spring semester Off-grounds stickers will be available starting Monday 1/14 in the main office at snack, lunch, or after school ONLY. You MUST have a current school ID to get a sticker, and you must get a new sticker for the spring semester.

·      This Friday, 1/11: Comedy Sportz has a match against Redondo Union at 7:00 pm at RUHS Auditorium. Tickets are $7.

·      This Saturday, Comedy Sportz are competing against April Fools, the professional comedy improv troupe, at 7:30 pm at the Pier Avenue Second Story Theater. Cost is $10 for adults and $8 for kids/seniors. Call 310-318-1705 or email [email protected] for discounted tickets.

SPORTS

·      If you are interested in trying out for the Girls’ Beach Volleyball Team, please visit our NEW website at https://miracostabeachvolleyball.com and register now if you have not already done so. Tryouts will be next week, Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 14 & 16 from 2:30 to 4:30 pm at 2nd Street in Manhattan Beach.

·      Swim Team Parent Meeting will take place on Thursday, 1/17 at 6:30 pm in the Small Theatre. Swimmers are welcome!

·      Final call for all 2019 season MCHS Ice Hockey players! Whether you played in past seasons, are new this season, went to the all-interest lunch meeting or not, ideally you have Division A experience and want to be considered for the 2019 Ice Hockey Team roster. We want to hear from you! If you are interested, please email Coach Dreger, [email protected] and assistant, [email protected] immediately so the team roster can be finalized and next steps can be communicated. Go Mustangs!

·      Interested in joining the Costa Badminton Team? Last tryouts are TODAY from 5 – 6:30 pm at 516 18th Street in Manhattan Beach.

CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS

·      Come to American Sign Language (ASL) Club in Room 232 on Fridays to learn new signs, make new friends, and eat yummy snacks. Can’t wait to see you there!

·      Math Club meetings are held every Tuesday at lunch. Come to Room 131 if you want to improve your skills, learn new concepts, and compete against other mathletes. All levels of math are welcome!

·      If you missed Improv Club, come next week! Tuesdays in the Drama Room 2 at lunch. Thank you, Costa, for making Ansley Powers and Hudson Carter (power couple) go to Improv Club! Everyone else, join them!

·      The next Badminton Club meeting is Monday, Jan. 14 at lunch in Room 332. Meetings are weekly and mandatory for team members!

·      Mira Costa Gender Sexuality Alliance meets every Thursday (TODAY) at lunch in Room 23, Mr. Zeoli’s room. Meet a group of loving and supportive people, engage in activist work to help make campus a more accepting environment, and raise funds for various charities and organizations.

COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER

·      College Representative Visits In The CCC – If visit is during class please get teacher permission    to attend. This is an opportunity to learn about your schools of interest and meet the admission counselors. View all visits and sign-up to attend on NAVIANCE. Please bring your school ID.

o  Friday, 1/11Santa Monica College at 12:20pm in the CCC – Application assistance and any questions will be covered.

·      Sophomores and Juniors

o  If you took the PSAT in October your printed score reports are now available for pick-up in the CCC.

o  PSAT, Now What?  Presentation Thursday, Jan. 24, 5:30pm – Mira Costa High School College & Career Center. The PSAT is a student’s first step in the standardized testing and college application process. When utilized properly, the PSAT can propel students on their journey to college. Learn how to interpret the PSAT score report, what your child’s PSAT scores indicate about their future SAT/ACT performance, how the National Merit Scholarship Competition works, and more. Jean Stroud, Academic Advisor at Revolution Prep, will explain. Please bring your student’s PSAT score report. Both parents and students are encouraged to attend. Please sign up on Naviance or in the CCC, as seating is limited!

·      SENIORS Visit the CCC for College Application Assistance.

Scholarship Notebook Program:

The scholarship notebook is a personal profile that will be read by members of community scholarship committees. Each scholarship committee creates their own criteria for selection and carefully screens the applicants to find the appropriate candidates for their scholarships. The scholarship donors are looking for students who may meet ANY of the following criteria:

•Have financial need

•Plan to attend a two- or four-year school or trade school

•Have completed numerous volunteer hours

•Plan to study a particular major (i.e. Art, Dance, Business, English)

•Deserve a merit award for excellent grades

•Have a talent that the committee wishes to honor

•Meet any number of additional criteria!

For students to be eligible to apply, they must attend ONE of the following five information  meetings in the CCC during lunch on January 8, 10, 14, 17 or during PM Office Hours on Wednesday, January 9.  Students must sign-up on Naviance prior to the meeting to attend. Please bring $5 to purchase the notebooks.

·         Summer Programs

o   Juniors Boys - American Legion’s Boys State Program is seeking applicants. American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruction for U.S. high-school students.  It is a participatory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state government.  If selected, students attend the week-long program at Sacramento State University beginning on June 22nd, 2018.  For more information visit:  https://www.legion.org/boysnation/stateabout. ·      SoCal Roc is now enrolling for the spring 2019 semester. Classes begin Monday, Jan. 28. Come to the CCC to sign up and learn more about the classes we offer.
