College Prep English 3-4 (Period 1) Assignments

Today in class we had Day 1 of the DIRT presentations, to be continued on the day of the final. Periods 3+4 turned in their Night books, and Period 4 had a portfolio check.

Today in class periods 3 and 4 first finished going over the corporation questions; we then annotated the background on Night and answered questions about it; we then were given questions on the book that were divided up by sections according to groups.

Today in class we finished the movie and turned in our questions; we went over the questions; we also read and highlighted and went over the MLA citation guide; finally we turned in the 1984 extra credit and our research paper outlines.

Today in class we learned about the three methods of persuasion and rhetorical devices; we got instructions on doing an outline for the research paper; we continued to watch The Corporation and work on our questions.

Today in class we had DIRT day 30; we graded the quizzes from Friday; we had Journal #12 titled "World Problems" but first listened to a song titled "Dear God 2.0" about problems in the world; we then turned in our composition books; we also returned our 1984 books and checked out the Night books; finally we got a handout explaining the research paper and were told to finish the extra-credit for 1984 by Monday.

Today in class we finished the screenwriting/performances; we graded the part 2 quiz and took the final 1984 quiz; we then had DIRT day 30.

Today we received a packet of questions for part 3 of 1984 for our reference only (to use to study from) and we got back our part 3 reading logs (to study from); the rest of the period we worked on adapting a section of the end of 1984 to script and wrote it in multiple copies with carbon paper and then performed it (in small groups).

Today in class we had DIRT day 28; we finished going over pt. 2 questions; and we started to play jeopardy with candy and teams to review for pt. 2 quiz.

Today in class we saw a powerpoint and took notes on Irony and Satire (this is stuff we need to know for the next two quizzes on 1984); we then continued to go over Part 2 questions; Part 2 quiz and reading log for part 3 due date were postponed till Tuesday.

Today in class we had DIRT day 27, we graded the quizzes from yesterday, and we divvied up the questions for Part 2--everyone was supposed to prepare an answer and support it with a quote.

Today in class we took the quiz on Part 1; we had journal #11; and we had time finish part 2 questions and turn them in before the end of the period and to start reading part 3.

Today in class we had DIRT day 26; we finished the part 1 review from Friday and played the Vocab game for our grammar teams, reviewing the words that will be on tomorrow's quiz.

Today in class we had DIRT day 23; we had the names and terms on the study guide as well as chapters 6-7 questions divvied up and we each had to present one.

Today in class we watched a couple movie clips (from Bladerunner and The Wall) having to do with the dystopian theme, and we wrote a journal (#10 titled Dystopia); we discussed chapters 3-5 for participation points; and we started to go over the Study Guide.

Today in class we had DIRT day 22; we had time to complete the questions in our packet through chapter 4; and we discussed chapters 2-3 for participation points.

Today in class we had a warm-up review regarding the 1984 background; we got a reading schedule, a study guide, and a discussion log which we had to complete in class as we were going over the first three chapters of the novel and the exposition, as well as the questions in our packets; we also got a handout that explains the principles of Newspeak; we took two slides of notes from the powerpoint.

Today in class we had DIRT day 21; we graded the quizzes from Friday and we had Grammar Monday with new teams, looking at parallelism.

Today in class we read and annotated the background on George Orwell and 1984; we then created notes in groups and presented the notes; everyone had to turn in a complete set of notes; we then did a group assignment called "Creating the Perfect Dictatorship."

Today in class we turned in our book reports; we got the instructions for our next and final DIRT book; we also got the prompt for the Timed Writing Thursday; then we went over the Rime discussion questions for verbal participation points; fnally, we got the Character/Theme analysis outlines we'll be working on tomorrow.

Today in class we turned in our discussion q's; we reviewed MLA format for parenthetical citations and the Works Cited; we reviewed what you need to turn in tomorrow; we then did Grammar Monday, working on quotation marks and other punctuation marks.

Timed Writing Thursday on Rime

Today in class we finished going over the Rime quesions; we did a journal titled "Omen"; we received discussion questions and began listening to an audio recording of the story.

Today in class we finished watching Bright Star, turned in the film analysis and reviewed for the test tomorrow, using the study guide, with our poem partners.

Today in class we continued to watch Bright Star; we received a study guide for the test on Friday and also a packet of some additional Keats poems to help with question 10 of the film analysis, poems that are quoted from in the movie; tomorrow we'll be finishing up the movie and reviewing for the test Friday.

Today in class we had DIRT day 15; we took notes on John Keats's life; we read "Ode to a Nightengale" a couple times and then worked with our Poem Partners on the sense chart following the poem, giving examples of sight imagery, smell imagery, etc.

Today in Class we had DIRT Day 5, we went over the Venn Diagram (after turning it in); we took notes on pastoral poetry and read an example, the poem "The Passionate Shepherd to His Love" and answered the assigned questions (#s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 14 from the handout titled Questions to Ask About a Poem).

HW: Read "The Nymph's Reply" (a response to the poem above) and answer the same questions (#s 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 12, 14).

Today in class we took notes on Courtly Love; we went over "My Lute, Awake" and read another courtly love poem, "On Monsieur's Departure," did an analyis and went over it.
