English 1-2 CP (Period 1) Assignments

Today in class we finished up the presentations and reviewed some of the vocabulary/literary terms.

HW: study for test; prepare for seminar

Today in class students presented on their mythology topics.

HW: study for final exam (review vocab, literary terms, grammar); prepare answers for Socratic Seminar on Of Mice and Men; be prepared to turn in journals/reading logs and any unredeemed passes on the day of the final.

Today in class period 1 went to the library for research; period 6 did the questions from chapter 3 in the mythology reading and had SSR; in both periods we went over the socratic seminar part of the final exam.

Today in class, the questions were collected and we went to the library for mythology research.

Today in class we had SSR day 9; we added the Lord of the Flies essays to the portfolios and updated the portfolio logs; the mythology presentation assignments were passed out as well as a reminder of the instructions/timeline; we did an activity called Bumper Stickers for Gods/Goddesses; Period 1 worked on reading questions for the chapter on the creation of the world/mankind.

HW: Period 1--finish questions; read pages 92-100 and 103-108

1st period--today in class we had SSR day 9, and students completed a 10-bullet point summary of chapter 4 in OMAM; we went over the reading questions (and the power went out school-wide); we then divvied up the topics for the mythology research and presentation; and students got back their Lord of the Flies essays.

6th period--we went to the library to start research on mythology topics; Ms. Lofton talked about creating the works cited page; using google docs; and using the pathfinders on the libary website for research; she also mentioned the cart of books in the library related to mythology.

Today in class we had SSR day 8; we finished going over the Of Mice and Men packet; the mythology research and presentation instructions were given; and questions on the mythology reading was given.

Today in class students turned in their Antigone projects and wrote the Timed Writing on Antigone; Mythology books were checked out.

Today in class we finished going over page 2 of the OMAM questions; we got the breakdown for the final and a study guide for the grammar portion of the final test; we took notes on the purposes of myth; we went over the specifications for tomorrow's timed writing, starting on the outline.

Today in class we had the vocab quiz; we had SSR day 7; we graded the Antigone tests; and started to go over the packets for Chapters 1-3 of Of Mice and Men.

Today in class students turned in their essays; there was a quiz on Greek drama and tragedy; we finished reading Antigone; and we reviewed the process for creating an account on turnitin.com and uploading an essay.

Today in class students peer-edited each other's essays; the homework was collected; we started to go over the questions; and period 6 went over the notes on tragedy and tragic heroes; we also reviewed basic MLA format (see attached).

Today in class students took notes from a powerpoint on Steinbeck and Of Mice and Men (see attached); we had SSR day 1 for the 2nd Quarter; the journal that was homework was stamped; there was the test on Lord of the Flies; and the essay prompt and rubric was passed out for Lord of the Flies.

Today in class we finished watching the movie; discussed the differences with the book; and turned in the read, view, compares; short story rewrites were also turned in; Period 6 put their note cards and posters into their portfolios.

Today in class we watched the movie The Lord of the Flies; students had to complete a Read, View, Compare while watching.

Today in class the comp books were returned and we had the first journal of second quarter titled "civilization 2" (see slide in ppt. attached); we discussed chapters 10-12; took notes on allegory; and read the except from the bible discussing Christ's temptation in the desert; Mice and Men books were checked out.

Today in class the homework was checked; there was a journal titled "Simon's Death" (see appropriate slide in ppt. attached); the journals/ssr responses were collected; we discussed the characters' attitudes toward the beast and life; we discussed and took notes on the characters as symbols and other symbols (attached).

Today in class there was a quiz scheduled (period 6 took the quiz--period 1 was rescheduled for tomorrow since we got started late); the rest of the period was devoted to creating the note cards for the presentation tomorrow.

Today in class the questions were collected; there was a "beast life philosophy" assignment that was given in groups then collected; we went over the chapter 8 questions and started reading chapter 9.

Today in class we finished going over chapters 6-7 questions; the 1st quarter grammar teams were announced and new teams were given; we reviewed adverbs and did the exercises for team points.

Today in class we went over the chapter 5 character analysis and students were able to add to their answers and resubmit to recoup some of their points; there was also a journal (see slide 2 in PowerPoint attached).

Today in class we turned in the character analysis, the imagery poster quotes and looking for descriptive details was reiterated; grammar fundays was continued--we finished verbs and adjectives.

Today in class there was SSR day 18; the instructions for the presentation on the outside reading book were given (attached); there was a quiz on chapters 4-6 including vocabulary; and we had grammar fundays, continuing our review of parts of speech, looking at verbs.

Today in class we had SSR day 17; we discussed the chapter 5 questions; and started on the character analysis.

Today in class students turned in the vocabulary homework and then worked on chapter 5 questions and turned in; we then went over the vocabulary; and students had time to work on their imagery posters or finish the questions; those who finished early started reading chapter 6.

Today in class we discussed leadership qualities; students worked in groups on their chapter analyses and presented on individual chapters; then the analyses were collected.

Today in class there was a second and final edit of the essays(see attached) and we went over basic MLA format (attached); there was a survival skills questionnaire and a journal describing a desert island using your list of descriptive words (attached).

Today we had the homework checked and we went over it; we discussed the ethics of hunting; notes were given on characterization and students worked with their 3 o'clock partners to do a venn diagram comparing the main characters, which we went over; finally we reviewed mood, answering questions about how the atmosphere is created in "the most dangerous game".

Today in class we worked on foreshadowing; we made appointment groups; we took notes on the elements of plot and types of conflict; we filled out story maps for "The Most Dangerous Game" and discussed the different meanings of the word "game"; we went over the story maps.

Today in class we went over the purpose of journals and how they are graded; students received a writing log to keep track of the journals assigned; students cut and pasted Journal #1 into their Comp Books and wrote Journal #2 titled "Summer" (see attached documents); I collected all the signed forms (classroom policies, ethics policy, and the waiver form) and checked the class supplies; we watched a PowerPoint on Class Norms (see my website if you need to review); reviewed the Ethics Policy, and finished the review questions.

HW: tomorrow and Thursday we meet in the library (bring your id, paper, and pen) for library orientation---there will be a quiz afterwards so pay attention!
