Description

This course is designed to be a college level art history survey class. Students will be learning art history chronologically, beginning with Paleolithic painting and sculpture and ending with Post-Modernism. The course will spend the most time on Renaissance Art to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, then Ancient through Medieval, and finally art beyond the European artistic traditions, including Africa, the Americas, Asia, Near East, Oceania, and global Islamic traditions.

Students will learn art history through experiencing art, contextual and visual analysis, lectures, activities, discussions, writing, reading, and understanding art vocabulary. They will learn to develop their skill in analyzing works of art including paintings, drawings, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, printmaking, and fibers. An emphasis will be put on learning works of art through context and learn styles to determine century, culture, and artist. It is not necessary to learn every work of art and memorize dates, titles, and artists. Stay on top of your readings, assignments, homework, and flash cards.
