AP English Literature (Period 1)

Course Description

This Year-long course aims to prepare students for the AP Literature Test in May. Along the way, I hope students engage actively in the pursuit of intellectual enlightenment. We will read and discuss novels, poetry, philosophy, short stories, and manifestations of the written word which defy the narrow boundaries the genres above suggest.
We will write in response to these encounters in a way which develops both the skills of writing, and the perspectives which lead to deeper understanding of ourselves, others, and the nature of reality itself.

model of MLA and Morality in literature

This bit of reserve reading will offer two benefits to the avid reader of the reserve materials. 1. It serves as a model for the method whereby students will give credit to sources in their own exploration of morality in literature. 2. It serves as a model of the conversational style and organic method of argumentation that your essay will follow.

No need to merely evaluate or enumerate examples. Work evaluation of literature into your discussion of the sources you have considered.

This sample essay also contrasts the way in which authors either philosophize or moralize--these are two approaches to literature which we have been discussing. Hopefully our background discussions on philosophy will serve you as you peruse this essay.
