Today in class there Beowulf vocabulary quizzes were returned; we reviewed vocabulary and literary terms in grammar teams; at the end of the period there was time to work on our portfolios and collaborate.

Today in class we discussed the prologue and character types; we listened to the first few stanzas of the prologue in Middle English; we got the Beowulf tests back and the Macbeth essays.

Today in class we had SSR, day 5; notes were given on Chaucer's life and there was a PowerPoint with pictures of Chaucer/images of Canterbury Tales; notes were also given on the background to CT--purpose, content, structure; we then discussed storytelling--why do people tell stories? what kinds of stories do people tell? what do they say about us?

HW: finish reading SSR book; work on book reviews and presentations for final; study for final test; TW on Friday on Sir Gawain (4 paragraphs only)

Today in class we turned in the chaucer questions; we finished going over the Gawain packet; the timed writing was explained for Friday--no prep work need be or should be done for this; and the SSR book review instructions were given.

Today in class the raps and boast were performed and we had SSR day 4.

Today in class there was a PowerPoint of images from Beowulf and the questions were collected; the tests were given on Beowulf; we segued into SSR day 3; the essay outline and rubric were passed out, as well as the Beowulf boast/rap assignment.

Today in class the Gawain annotations were collected; we finished going over the Beowulf questions; we went over the Kennings journal; watched an excerpt from Ben Bagby's performance of Beowulf in Old English; acted out a spoof of Beowulf; and the prompts for the Timed Writing were passed out; we finished the class with SSR.

Today in class we finished the movie; discussed the differences from the play; we then went over then notes for epic poetry, as well as the anglo-saxon and middle ages timeline and the development of the English language chart; the content of tomorrow's quiz was explained and we reviewed the historical background packet; students had some more time at the end of the period for their portfolios.

Today in class the essays and peer edits were collected; and we nearly finished watching the movie.

Today in class the essays were collected and redistributed with peer edit forms; a video was shown by Reduced Shakespeare and we continued to watch the movie.

Today in class we read and discussed Robert Frost's poem, "Out, Out"; watched a Macbeth rap; and started watching the movie--students are to take "read, view, compare" notes; essay outlines were also collected, graded, and returned.

Today in class we discussed symbols in act 2; there was a quiz on acts 1-2 followed by some SSR time; the instructions were given for the outside reading book presentations; and a list of literary terms was passed out.

Today in class some of the allusions to Macbeth were displayed; we reviewed scenes 1-3; a map was passed out of Scotland, with landmarks from the play; there was a blank verse worksheet and a couple videos on iambic pentameter, as well as a worksheet on inferences; we started to go over scenes 4-7 questions.

Today in class we had SSR day 1; we worked on Appositives and Appositive Phrases for Grammar Fundays; and we went over the vocabulary words for Macbeth, Acts 1 and 2.

Today we discussed some questions/issues related to reading "The Grand Inquisitor;" an annotation sample was given and students started working on their own annotations of GI; information was also passed out regarding creating a turnitin.com account, submitting a paper to turnitin.com, and registering in my class on turnitin.com.

2. Finish Greek, Latin, Norse mythology word/phrase definitions and stories--note: the book I have is The Dictionary of Classical, Biblical, and Literary Allusions; you may be able to find an online version of this or search specifically for "English words from Norse mythology."

Today in class we did an "exit slip" on the presentations; the Greek, Roman, and Norse Mythology Vocabulary assignment was explained; we took notes on Dostoyevsky and "The Grand Inquisitor" and we read "The Grand Inquisitor" in class; the Biblical literature tests were also passed back.

HW: finish reading the Grand Inquisitor; work on the Greek/Roman/Norse words assignment (due Thurs.)

Today in class we turned in the Introduction to Research paper homework; we had SSR, day 6 and wrote a response; we went over the final step in the research paper and some tips on MLA format, in-text citations, and Works Cited (see attached); we got into grammar teams and went over exs. 15, 16, 17, and 18 in the Prefixes and Roots packet and we reviewed everything in teams for points.

HW: Step 4 in the Introduction to Research Paper--after completing this step email your paper to me including the rubric as the last page; also create a Google docs account if you don't already have one.

Today in class the homework was collected; we finished going over the study guide and reviewed with the white boards; we took the test.

Today in class we viewed a PowerPoint of Biblical images and a video called the Bible in a Minute; we discussed the creative writing assignment due Monday; and we went to the library for research.

Today in class we discussed the difference between the birthright and the blessing in the Old Testament; we went over the Genesis part 4 questions and watched some musical/cartoon clip versions of the story of Joseph; we had a journal titled Exodus before which we listened to some songs inspired by the Exodus story in the Bible; we worked with a partner on the Exodus questions.

Today we turned in the editorial; read a poem called "Fire and Ice"; presented the origin myths; had SSR and went over annotating for the outside reading book (see attached); and worked with partners on the Genesis part 1 questions (chapters 1-12).

Today we discussed the journal that was homework; we read a response that I wrote (attached); outside reading books were checked; we read and annotated an "Introduction" to the Bible and answered questions afterwards (Introduction Review--see attached); we got a study guide for the introduction to the Bible terminology (attached); we read and discussed the definition of cultural literacy, going over idioms and allusions--definitions and examples; we took notes on literary concepts relevant to the Bible.

Today in class homework was turned in, there was a journal titled "the Mirror" (see prompt attached); the editorial/opinion writing assignment was explained and notes were given on methods of persuasion and rhetorical devices; some examples of editorials from the LA Times were also given; we also went over the reading quiz for participation and discussed the "zero-tolerance" article; SSR and the outside reading book for 1st quarter information was passed out.

Today homework was collected; there was a library orientation video and a quiz; we discussed "Tolerance"; listened to "Where is the love?" and wrote a journal on a world problems song.

Today in class we went over the purpose of journals and students received a writing log handout to keep track of journals (see attached); journal #3 was assigned, a response to Ithaka and The City (attached); class supplies were check and all signed forms turned in; a Class Norms PowerPoint was shown and the Ethics Policy reviewed, as well as the seating chart was reviewed.
