Regular Attendance Is Essential For Learning
Consistent attendance and in-class participation directly impact student success. As a matter of fact, studies have shown that students who attend school regularly and on time achieve at higher levels than students who do not have regular attendance. Additionally, students who regularly attend school feel connected with their peers, teachers, and the school community, which benefits their overall social-emotional well-being.
Mira Costa is committed to cultivating exemplary attendance habits by implementing District and State policies. To learn more about the school’s attendance protocols please refer to the links and information below:
Attendance Policies
Please take a moment to read the Attendance Policies and Procedures in the Student Handbook. Attendance procedures may be different than last year at Costa or your previous school.
ONLY FULL DAY ABSENCES CAN BE REPORTED HERE
If a full day absence is unavoidable please complete the form below within three days of your student’s absence. Required fields are marked with an (*). You may be contacted by the school office for updates or additional information.
Please do not submit multiple absence reports for the same absence.
Please allow up to 3 business days for your absence submission (physical note or online form) to be reflected in Aeries. Off Grounds slips and notes received on the date of the absence may not be processed before the end of the school day and may result in a notification. If your student has already submitted documentation, please allow a few days for this to be entered. Check Aeries attendance daily.
Please review the Attendance Policy Guide for any questions.
Arriving late to school
For safety, students must check in through the Attendance Office. To verify a tardy, please send a signed note with your student's name and the reason for the tardy. Please refer to the Attendance Policy for excused tardies.
Feeling Sick at School?
Students MUST check out through the Health Office and follow the Health Office guidelines. Students who leave without checking out will be marked truant. Period absences cannot be excused if a student doesn't check in or out following the above protocols.
Leaving Campus Early
If your student is leaving campus early, they MUST get an Off Grounds Permit from the Attendance Office or Health Office BEFORE leaving campus. If a student leaves campus without an Off Grounds Permit, they are truant. The truancy cannot be corrected after the fact. Please ensure your student gets an Off Grounds Permit BEFORE leaving campus by sending a physical note with them to the Attendance Office, or coming to the Attendance Window to sign them out.
Scheduled Activity (doctor appt. etc.):
-
Step 2: Have your student go to the attendance office before school, during lunch or break, during office hours, or during a passing period prior to their appointment time. They will receive an off-grounds permit.
Without a signed note, a parent/guardian must come into the Attendance Office in-person to sign for an Off Grounds Permit. However, this disrupts instruction in the classroom. We highly encourage that students with scheduled appointments obtain an off-grounds permit so they can leave on time without the need for parents to park and go to the Attendance Office.
Absence/Tardy entered in error?
If your student believes they were marked absent or tardy in error, then please have them speak to the teacher as soon as possible. Teachers are able to correct these within 3 days of the occurrence. After 3 school days, the student will need to pick up an Absence Clearance Form from the Attendance office to have their teacher sign it before the Attendance office can clear the absence.
