Classroom Expectations

Course Objectives : This class will strive to develop conversational ability, to build reading, writing, and comprehension skills and to instill an appreciation of various hispanic cultures. Since learning a foreign language entails daily practice, it is the student’s responsibility to study consistently at home.

Prerequisite to Remain in the Class : Per MCHS foreign language department, students entering Spanish must have a "C" or better in order to take the next level course and must maintain at least a "C" or better in order to be eligible for the following semester. It will be recommended that a student repeat the course if a student has a "C-" or lower. ***FINAL EXAM IS 25% OF THE FINAL GRADE.

Academic Effort : Students will be expected to bring paper and a writing utensil and their text to class each day. Notes should be taken in class to supplement text explanations. Spanish 5-6 students will be required to bring a separate 3-subject spiral notebook to class as well.

Classroom Conduct : Students will be expected to learn in a positive and active manner. Have respect for your peer as he/she learns the language. This class will entail oral work so mutual respect is essential for positive learning. Disrespect of any kind will NOT be tolerated.

Absences/Make-up Work : Attendance is vital because you cannot learn if you are not here. When you are absent, it is your responsibilty to make up all work that you have missed. As a general rule you will have as long to make up missed work as you were absent. Every student in this class will need a classmate who will be responsible for updating their friend in terms of class notes and explanations.

Grading : Grades will be averaged upon a point system that is transferred to a percentage based on the following chart:

97-100 A+            77-79 C+
94-96 A                74-76 C
90-93 A–              70-73 C-
87-89B+               67-69 D+
84-86 B                64-66 D
80-83 B-               60-63 D-
0 -59 FAIL

Quizzes and tests are weighed differently from classwork and homework. Students will not receive credit for homework that is incomplete. At the 5, 10 and 15 week the homework grade will be the equivalent of one test score. At the semester, the homework grade will be the equivalent of three test scores. A student shall receive an "N" in citizenship if the homework grade is between 60-69% (D) on the next report card. A student shall receive a "U" in citizenship if the homework grade is lower than 59% (FAIL).

No credit will be given to work missed due to truancy. Any student caught cheating, whether on a homework assignment, test, or project, will automatically receive an "F" and will be processed per the MCHS Code of Ethics.

Extra Credit Stamp Sheet : Each student is given an extra credit stamp sheet on his/her first day of class. This sheet is given out only once per semester and if it is lost, a new one cannot be obtained. Stamps may be converted to extra credit points solely at the end of the semester – NO EXCEPTIONS. Stamps may be turned in for prizes, however, at any time during the semester once the given amount of stamps needed to receive the prize is obtained.

Participation Grade : Every five weeks each student shall receive a grade based upon participation. The grade is the equivalent of one test score.

On the participation card: + = Answer is correct

4 = Answer is correct, with help (-3 pts)
  •  – = Not prepared (-10 pts)
  • A = Absent (-4 pts)
  • V = Volunteer point (extra credit point) *
  • U = Disruptive behavior (3 U’s = U in citizenship on next report card)

Disciplinary Action : If I foresee problems with attendance, behavior or attitude, or academic progress, I will contact student’s parent or guardian.
